Photography policies
Visitors are welcome to take photographs, using handheld still or video cameras, of the Museum and its collection and grounds under the following guidelines:
Use of flash lighting or external photo equipment in the galleries is not permitted. Lights and photography equipment may damage some artwork.
Visitors may not photograph temporary exhibitions or borrowed works of art. Conditions attached to the contract of loaned items may prohibit the use of photography.
There are many works in the galleries and on the grounds for which the IMA does not hold the copyright, meaning that the Museum does not have the right to permit reproductions in any form without permission of a third party. Photographers are responsible for following applicable copyright law. Because of copyright law, photography is not permitted on the third gallery level.
Revenue from the sales of licensed reproductions in The IMA Store is necessary to help support the Museum and to enable the IMA to continue its mission. Images taken and used without IMA permission may misrepresent the Museum or disseminate inaccurate information. Photographs are for personal use only and cannot be published, sold, reproduced, transferred, distributed, or otherwise used for commercial purposes.
To obtain permission to reproduce images of the buildings, gardens, grounds or works of art in the IMA‘s collection, or to obtain Museum generated images of the above, please contact the Rights and Reproductions Office 317-923-1331 ext. 171 or permissions@imamuseum.org.
Media
Members of the media may photograph or film within designated areas of the IMA for the purpose of news coverage. All members of the press must make arrangements with the Communications Department by calling 317-923-1331 ext. 295 prior to arrival.
Commercial photography and photography shoots
Photographers may use the IMA's grounds as settings for their photography shoots so long as they are respectful of other IMA visitors and so long as they do not disturb the IMA's grounds. Photographers and the subjects of the photographs are not allowed to touch any sculptures or to be in any water features or fountains, or other bodies of water. Photographers are responsible for following applicable copyright law.
Though the IMA does not require photographers to seek permission from the IMA, the Museum reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to withhold and/or withdraw permission to photograph on its premises or to reproduce photographs of objects in its collection.
Groups requiring changing facilities must call at least three weeks in advance for special accomodations. Rental fees may apply. Call 317-923-1331 ext. 243.
