Ceramic vessels are found in many areas of Africa south of the Sahara desert. There are hundreds of distinct vessel traditions, each with a unique style. Vessels are used for storage, transport of substances, cooking and many other uses.

The art of potter is almost always practiced by women. No potter’s wheel is used, and the clay is baked in a low temperature open pit.
