Chairs of Chokwe rulers are a blending of European and African influences. They are modeled after high-backed chairs introduced by the Portuguese over three hundred years ago, and they are decorated with figures relating to Chokwe kingship. On the back of the chair, the three figures with large, curved headdresses depict rulers, while the four masked figures directly above them represent protective ancestor spirits.
