Turner's lifelong fascination with the potent forces of nature first manifested itself in this rain-swept panorama of Llanthony Abbey in the stormy Black Mountains of South Wales.

Atmospheric conditions were not suggested in the precise pencil sketch that Turner made on site, but were rather conjured from memory when he fashioned the watercolor in his studio.
