John Smith was the keeper of the print room at the British Museum from 1816 to 1833 and stole an opportunity to make a surre ptitious sketch of his famous visitor, Turner, looking through one of the museum's albums of prints.

In the first years of the 1830s, Turner was commissioned to paint views of the Holy Land, which he had never visited. Engravings of those places in the British Museum would have been helpful.
